-- The bad news: as you will have noticed by now, this site is no longer being updated.

The good news: www.tomtykwer.com, the official Tom Tykwer webpage, is now online. And you'll even find the name of yours truly in the editorial. ;o)

www.tykwer-online.de came to existence back in the fall of 1998, more than six years ago. Sometimes it's hard to believe that it's actually been six whole years while at the same time it appears to me that it has always been a part of my online activities. :o)

I started off with a Pentium I computer, a 28.8k-Modem, no flatrate, and the local phone company charging me local phone call rates for every minute I was online. Now flatrates and dsl are the common way of being online. And the website started off being hosted by geocities[!] until I finally switched to a decent webhost with no pop-ups etc. Which also meant: paying for it.

I must say I'm a bit proud that this website was actually the very first about Tom Tykwer on the net. In times when not googling but surfing to Altivista was the way to look up things, no other pages apart from the official (German) Winter Sleepers and Run Lola Run webpages gave any decent information about Tom's cineastic activities. After just a few months, I decided to write this website in German as well as English, and it appears my intuition was right: in the summer of 1999, Run Lola Run was released in the US and Canada and from then on, things got a bit big and crazy. :o)

With the release of The Princess and the Warrior, I realised it was about time I got a new computer and a faster connection to the net since I couldn't access the official Princess webpage anymore: with my technical equipment, it simply took too long to load it. (You could argue whether a webpage that cannot be accessed with a slow modem is actually good web design, but that's a totally different subject. ;o) And after all, I needed a new computer anyway.)
In a 'celebrity chat' with Tom at the time, he thanked me personally online for my website. Wow, I had never before sat in front of the computer actually blushing.

After I decided to concentrate on my academic 'career' (ie final exams, finishing my studies etc), updates became less frequent, in fact, I only just realised a few weeks ago that the last time I updated my site was more than a year ago.

Most of the contents on www.tomtykwer.com as it can be seen now was already there when I "joined the team". I am now responsible for answering emails and updating the news section, which is not only a nice job but also "one step further" for me, as it were. While I won't be updating tykwer-online.de for the time being, this website as it is will stay online for quite a while, we're even trying to move as much info from this site to tomtykwer.com.

I just re-read my intro to these pages, and I have to say: it's still true.

Big thanks to everyone for your support over the years! I had a time maintaining this website, I really did.

Hope to see you all at www.tomtykwer.com.

Cheers,
Jan.
