While Tykwer showed in Wintersleepers a fatalism underlayed by the symphonic neo-mysticism of Arvo Pärt, which, being aestheticized to the point of weightlessness, lets the irony of the tragic-comedies of his generation shine through, Lola runs through a quasi-philosophical experiment whose pumping trance-techno indulges in an MTV-compatible concept of fate. And Tykwer doesn't leave his studies to chance, because the autodidact is the director, script writer, composer and producer of his films.
